Diaper Rash Creams, What Works Best..

My son is now 3 months old and we have been blessed that he has never had a diaper rash.. until recently. Because he is teething and producing more saliva his Number 2 has contained more acid which caused a pretty nasty rash that appeared in just an hour's time.

Luckily we had 3 different diaper rash creams on hand so I got to try a few types to see which kind was most effective.

I started out with the ever popular Boudreaux's Butt Paste. It comes in a cute tube with an amusing name. The application was fairly simple with some fragrance. The texture of the creme was kind of a mixture between smooth and chunky..however I couldn't get the cream to adhere to his buns worth a darn. The second the diaper hit the buns the cream was instantly wiped away from the inflamed area which did not help to protect the buns or heal them.

After a few applications of the Butt Paste, I next tried Aveeno Baby Soothing Diaper Rash Cream. Right away I liked the Aveeno brand better. It was a smoother cream but it was very thick! I could put on several layers of the Aveeno and it would stick to the areas of the buns that needed treated. Most of the time it stuck so well that it was still noticeably on the buns when I removed the diaper for the next diaper change.

Within a few days the rash was almost completely cleared up but we had run out of our small tube of the Aveeno cream. The last diaper cream I tried was Desitin's Original Overnight Relief. Although I thought the Aveeno was spectacular in healing the rash I was very impressed with the Desitin. It was Hypoallergenic and the consistency was amazing! As my husband described it, "It is like smearing on Cool Whip." The best part about the Desitin was the cost. I priced it at my local Walmart and it was between $3-$4!

In review. The Butt Paste makes a fun baby shower gift but is not the best at healing a diaper rash, and the Aveeno soothing cream works terrific, however my mom pick on this one goes to the Overnight Relief Original formula Desitin.
